FIGURE SKATER WINS HONORS
Amanda (14), freshman at Johnston Middle
School, represented the Des Moines Figure Skating Club at the
Upper Great Lakes Regional Championships held in Richfield,
Minnesota on October 14-17. Amanda was the only figure skater
from the Des Moines metro to compete in the event which featured
over 600 skaters from a six state region. She skated to the
music “Bolero” featured in the movie “Moulin Rouge.” Her long
program featured several high difficulty level moves, including
a double lutz/double loop combination, a combination spin with
multiple variations, and a difficult footwork sequence. She
finished eighth place overall, receiving one of her
highest scores ever. Amands is coached by Mandy Safley
of Ames and skates six days a week. She has completed all of her
moves in the field tests as required by the United States Figure
Skating Association (USFSA) on the first attempt and is three
tests away from completing all of the freestyle tests.
